Pregnancy Acne & Skincare

Hormonal fluctuations during pregnancy can lead to flare-ups of skin conditions like acne, rosacea, pigmentation, and periorificial dermatitis or even cause them to appear for the first time. While some topical treatments such as retinoids and hydroquinone can’t be used during pregnancy, that doesn’t mean you have to deal with skin problems for the entire nine months. There are safe and effective options available.

Azelaic Acid is a great all-rounder that’s safe to use in pregnancy. Available over the counter, and by prescription, this ingredient tackles acne, rosacea, periorificial dermatitis, and pigmentation thanks to its anti-inflammatory and brightening properties.

Glycolic Acid, an alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA), is another pregnancy-safe option. It gently exfoliates the skin, making it useful for treating breakouts and improving skin tone.

The American Academy of Dermatology state that benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid can be used in small amounts and at low strengths — but always consult with your doctor before using them.

Dry skin is another common pregnancy complaint. Hyaluronic acid is safe and effective. It attracts moisture to the skin for a plumper, more radiant appearance.

When it comes to supplements, omega fatty acids help support skin, hair, and nail hydration and are safe during pregnancy. Folic acid isn’t just essential for fetal development — it also promotes healthy hair growth. As for oral collagen peptides, while specific pregnancy studies are lacking, they’re made of broken-down proteins, which are generally safe in pregnancy. Always discuss supplements with your healthcare provider.

Don’t forget your sunscreen. It’s vital for preventing pigmentation, and should be worn daily — rain or shine, indoors or out.
